HOUSING
BWCIL offers several housing programs catering to specific needs.
Welcome Home
• For people with disabilities who are homeless in Lapeer, Sanilac, Tuscola, and Huron Counties
• A collaborative program providing housing and housing support services to transition people
from homelessness

Door to Open
• A permanent housing program for people with mental illness in Lapeer, Sanilac, Tuscola, and
Huron Counties
• A collaborative among the local Community Mental Health agencies and the Human Development Commission
• Offers housing education, housing searches, and monitoring to assist residents with issues like cleaning, neighbors, and landlords

The Rural Housing Initiative
• A 90-day shelter program for residents of Huron, Sanilac, and Tuscola Counties, including people of
all abilities
• Targeting homeless men, two-parent families, and single people otherwise unserved by shelters, this program offers an extended stay in an apartment, giving the residents time to overcome
issues contributing to homelessness
• Provides support in finding long-term housing

ARRA Homeless Prevention/Rapid Rehousing (HRRP)
• A homelessness prevention program for residents of Huron, Sanilac, and Tuscola Counties,
including people of all abilities
• Funded by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act for a two-year period
• Assists homeless people and those in jeopardy of losing rental homes
• Coordinates supports needed for issues that contribute to homelessness, such as domestic violence, employment, or obtaining official documents
• Provides assistance with housing search and maintaining housing
