The BWCIL relies on volunteers to assist in several areas. Every contribution of time, talent and resources makes a difference. To be a volunteer is a priceless gift.

In the words of Margaret Mead, “ Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”

Volunteer Opportunities Currently Available:

Team Access:

Team Access consists of volunteers from all walks of life, with disabilities and without, interested in making communities accessible for all citizens. Opportunities to assist include helping businesses identify barriers to access, reviewing planning documents, advising on disability etiquette and building awareness of the American with Disabilities Act.

Training:

No advanced training is required, only a desire to make the communities of the Thumb accessible.

Time Commitment:

Team Access meets monthly. Additional time for special projects, training and awareness activities are at the discretion of the individual volunteer.

Peer Support:

Peer support opportunities are available in several areas. The best people to provide support to persons with disabilities is “someone who has been there, done that.” There is a need for peer support volunteers for those newly diagnosed with a disability, students with disabilities, and families with children with special needs, as well as others.

Training:

The desire to help and be a good listener are two of the most important criteria to volunteer as a peer mentor. The BWCIL provides training and support for peer mentors.

Time Commitment:

The time needed for this varies with the demands and requests made.

Board of Directors Committees:

The BWCIL Board of Directors has several committees which require the assistance of volunteers. Participation on a board committee is limited to BWCIL members. Those committees include fundraising, marketing, public image, and programs and services.

If you have an interest in helping on a committee and/or becoming a member, please contact Angela at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call (800) 527-2167.

Training:

Training for committees of the board is not required, only an interest in assisting the Board of Directors in performing their tasks.

Time Commitment:

The time varies with the needs of each committee.

Office Volunteers:

The BWCIL relies on volunteers to assist with a variety of office tasks, such as working on special projects, copying, filing, answering telephones and greeting visitors.

Training:

Training and instruction is provided by staff.

Time Commitment:

Time commitment for office volunteers varies with the needs of each office and the help needed.
